Dentures can be used for several reasons, including:

If you have a missing tooth/teeth.

You wish to improve the overall appearance of your mouth.

You want to improve your ability to bite and chew.

You want to have a longer-lasting solution for your dental needs.

A denture is a removable prosthesis used to replace one or more missing teeth. Complete dentures are made of acrylic (plastic). Partial dentures can also be made wholly of acrylic. Alternatively, they may consist of acrylic teeth on a light metal alloy base: this type of partial denture is more secure and less bulky, but also more expensive. Depending on your dental needs, you may require a partial denture to replace some missing teeth or a complete denture to replace all natural teeth on the upper, lower or both. Having a good set of dentures will enable you to speak, eat, and drink well and can often improve a person’s appearance.

After an initial consultation or examination, subsequent visits to the dental practice will include taking dental impressions, bite registration, fitting and reviews.

What will my dentist do?

The dentist used a putty-like material to make moulds of your mouth, called ‘impressions’. A dental technician uses them to make models for the denture to be built on. Second impressions may be taken to provide a more accurate fit.
The technician makes wax blocks which fit the model. The dentist puts these in your mouth to record the position of your jaws in relation to each other. The dentist then trims and seals the wax blocks to show the technician how your teeth should bite together, and the shape to make the denture.
A trial denture is made and put in your mouth. The dentist will ask you how it fits, feels and looks before they make any final changes.
The trial denture then goes back to the technician, who permanently fixes the teeth. The next visit consists of placing the finished denture in your mouth, adjusting the final fit and providing instructions on how to look after your dentures.

What are the benefits?

If you have lost some teeth, dentures can improve the way you look, bite, chew and speak.
They are custom-made to match your mouth and can be made to look as natural as possible.
The teeth that are left are protected from wear and tear. Without dentures, the natural teeth may move or tilt, stopping your teeth from biting together properly.
Dentures should be fitted immediately after the front teeth have been removed so that nobody will know that you had a tooth out. These are called ‘immediate’ dentures. Immediate dentures will gradually lose their fit over 12 months, and a dentist will need to see you during this time. Further visits will involve possible relining of the denture to improve the fit.

Manor Dental Practice is a wonderful surgery. I was a little traumatised after a previous very painful dental procedure, but Payal really took time to listen to me and she did everything possible to ensure my replacement fillings were painless, which I can honestly say they were. They have all the highest technology equipment and it was fascinating seeing my teeth in every possible way on a big screen - I feel confident for the first time in many years that my dental health is now really in good shape. The reception staff are also really lovely and helpful. All in all, I thoroughly recommend it.

Last year, my son had an accident while playing football which resulted in a cut to his gum and possible damage to his front tooth. We took him to our previous dentist, who refused to help and advised us to call 111. Unfortunately, 111 couldn't see him, so I started ringing around other dental practices.Manor Dental Practice were the only ones who helped. The dentist called me back personally, gave me advice, and arranged an emergency appointment for the following day.Since then, myself and my two children have moved to Manor Dental Practice, and we couldn't be happier. They are fantastic with my children, who are naturally a little reserved when it comes to dental visits.Our journey with Manor started a year ago, and I have since had my own appointment, which was extremely thorough. I would like to highly commend this practice. I have been to some pretty dreadful dentists over the years and this practice is a refreshing change. Everyone there (without exception) is always (without exception) friendly and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. The hygienist that I saw today took time to chat about day to day things initially and I felt like I mattered rather than just being patient number blah.
